The Session of Woodside consists of the pastor, the clerk, and the elders in active service. The pastor is an ordained Minister of the Word and Sacrament. Elders are chosen by the people and are ordained to strengthen and nurture the faith and life of the congregation. Together with the pastor, they exercise leadership, government and discipline and have responsibilities for the life of a particular church as well as the church at large.
The job of an Elder at Woodside is to:
- Pray for the people, staff, ministries and community around Woodside.
- Study Scripture together and seek God’s vision for what He wants Woodside to be and to do.
- Keep the peace if there are any conflicts or disputes that cannot be resolved by the staff or pastor.
- Set and keep the boundaries by determining if ministries are following the Vision, Mission, Values and Core Beliefs of Woodside.
- Hold the pastor and staff accountable to God and His people.
- Make decisions affecting the church as a whole.
- Serve as a trustee of the Corporation with the following powers: to receive, hold, encumber, manage, and transfer property, real or personal, for the church; to accept and execute deeds of title to such property; to hold and defend title to such property; to manage any permanent special funds for the furtherance of the purposes of the church, all subject to the authority of the session and under the provision of the Constitution of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), provided further that in buying, selling, and mortgaging real property, the trustees shall act only after the approval of the congregation granted in a duly constituted meeting.
The Clerk of Session is an elder who has been elected by the Session to record the transactions of the Session, keep its rolls of membership and attendance, preserve its records carefully and furnish extracts from them when required by another governing body of the church.
The 2010 Session members are the Moderator, the Rev. Douglas Hoglund, the Associate Pastor, the Rev. Gloria Yi, the Clerk of Session, Judith Jones, and Elders Mike Gaul, Rodney Gayle, Jon Heller, Debbie Huddleston, Karen Littley, Linda Marr, Susan Merchant, Jane Read, and Bud Schofield.
The officers of the Corporation are President Scott Wills, Vice President Dan Schaal, Secretary Judith Jones, and Treasurer Geoffrey MacKenzie.
