Week 2: Cleanse Your Heart

Download the Study Guide as a PDF

Week 1 Follow-Up: How did you do with the step of faith you committed to take during the week?  What can you celebrate? What obstacles or challenges are you facing? What are you learning?

Prayer: Ask God to reveal any idols or false loves which interfere with your relationship with Him. Ask Jesus to help you cleanse them from your heart.

After rediscovering the lost Book of the Covenant, King Josiah publically commits himself to follow its commandments with all his heart and soul. The people join him. Words, however, are not enough. He leads the nation on a mission to remove every idol and altar which steals their love for the Lord.

Read: 2 Kings 23:1-13

Watch: “Clutter"

Reflect:

  1. How do you feel about stuff? Do you love to collect or purge? What factors cause clutter? In what ways do a lot of things or responsibilities weigh you down or wear you down?

  1. King Josiah is the first to recommit his life to God. What are some public commitments you’ve made? How well have you followed through? What gets in the way?

  1. Josiah launches a mission to cleanse the Temple and the land of the altars of other gods. How did the Israelites accumulate all this idol clutter? How do you think it affected their relationship with the Lord?

  1. Do we as a society have false idols? If so, what kinds? Why? What clutter in our lives gets in the way of our relationship with God?

  1. What is the problem with letting little distractions or diversions take hold in our lives? What are some ways we can prevent this from happening?

  1. To the Ephesian church Jesus says, “You have forsaken your first love” (Revelation 2:4). In what ways do the things of this world distract you from your first Love?

Steps:

Think about your own life. What is cluttering your mind and heart and taking time from God?

An idol is anything we love more than God. Idols demand our time, money, energy and affection. Share with others the idols that influence you. What would your life be like without idols?

Where do you feel the Holy Spirit nudging you to get rid of/give up something?

Commit to giving up one idol/one thing cluttering your life and keeping you from God. Partner up with someone you can call for help and will hold you accountable.

Prayer: As you pray, praise God for the freedom you have to worship him as your first love.
