Week 5: Give Thanks

Week 4 Follow-Up:  Were you able to take one step to better know or hear God? Did you act on God’s direction? What can you celebrate? What obstacles or challenges are you facing? What are you learning?

Prayer: Ask God to give you a grateful and generous heart.

We know all we have and all we are comes from God. Yet the generous blessings which flow to us often leave as a trickle of gifts. In this passage Paul uses a simple and familiar analogy: seeds. God places many seeds in our hands. The question is: what do we do with them?

Read: 2 Corinthians 9:6-15

Watch: “Seeds”

  1. Have you ever planted a garden or tried to grow flowers or food? How did it go? What did you learn? What spiritual lesson is Paul teaching through his seed illustration (v. 6)?

  1. In Paul’s famous principle (v. 7) he says giving is decided in the heart. What goes on in your heart when you consider giving to…a homeless person, a relative, a charity, the church, or other request?

  1. Paul lists three ways to give: reluctantly, under compulsion, cheerfully (literally – hilariously). What factors cause you to feel each of these reactions?

  1. God supplies the seed so we can sow big by abounding in every good work (v. 8-10). What attitudes of the heart limit or increase this flow?

  1. “You will be made rich in every way…” (v. 11). In what sense does God make us “rich”? For what purpose? How rich do you feel?

  1. “This service that you perform” touches “the needs of God’s people” and beyond (v. 12-14). How do our gifts reach needs beyond our church and cause people to praise and thank God?

  1. In verse 15 Paul ends with an exclamation of praise. What is the indescribable gift? How does that influence our attitude about giving and living a life of gratitude?

What is a step you can take today to begin “sowing big”? What step will help you live an attitude of gratitude?  Ask someone to hold you accountable to whatever step you decide.

Prayer: Thank God for His abundant gifts. Ask Him to give you His eyes to see needs and His heart to sow His seeds.
