Week 7: “Seek the Kingdom”

Week 6 Follow-Up:  Were you able to take a step to clear the air and get closer to God? How did you feel when you let go of hidden burdens? What can you celebrate? What challenges are you facing? What are you learning?

Prayer: Ask God to help you put His priorities first in your life and to let go of worry and fear.

We all have worries. They occupy our thoughts and drain our energy. Worries often arise for two reasons: either something we want will not happen or something we don’t want will happen. Worries are tied to our priorities. Jesus gives us guidance for both.

Read: Matthew 6:25-34

Watch: “Exhausted”

Reflect:

  1. When it comes to worry where do you place yourself on the spectrum between “worry wart” and “not a care in the world”? Have you always been this way?

  1. Jesus tells us, “Do not worry about your life” (v. 25). What are the top three things in your life which cause you to worry?

  1. Jesus directs us to look at the way God cares for the birds of the air and the grass of the field (v. 26-31). How is this supposed to lessen our worries? Do you find these words comforting, unrealistic, or something else?

  1. Jesus asks, “Who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life?” (v. 27). How effective is worry? What does it accomplish? Why do we still worry? What’s an effective alternative to worry?

  1. “For the pagans run after all these things” (v. 32) In what ways do the priorities of our culture cause worry, exhaust energy, and sow discontent?

  1. “Seek first His kingdom and his righteousness…” (v. 33). How will your life be different if you made God and His ways your first priority. How will this change your time at work, home, community, etc?

  1. “Tomorrow will worry about itself” (v. 34) How will your life be different if you truly lived one day at a time?

Steps:

What is a step you can take today to lessen worry and make God first in some area of your life?  Ask someone to hold you accountable to whatever step you decide.

Prayer: Thank God for providing for your needs and for making you a part of His kingdom.
