Week 8: “Join the Movement”

Week 7 Follow-Up:  What step do you take to decrease worry and put God first in your life? How did you feel? What can you celebrate? What challenges are you facing? What are you learning?

Prayer: Praise God for making you part of His Kingdom movement. Ask Him to help you discover your part in His worldwide mission.

When Jesus becomes our Lord we also become citizens of His Kingdom. We join a worldwide movement of people seeking to do God’s will. We still live in this world but our home is with God. In today’s study we’ll look at what it means to be an outpost of heaven on earth.

Read: I Peter 2:4-12

Watch: “Immigrants”

Reflect:

  1. What do you know about your ancestors who came to America? When and how did they arrive? Why did they come? What was life like for them in the new world?

  1. Peter says those who come to Jesus are “like living stones, being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood…” (v. 5) How does your concept of “church” change when you think of it as a movement of people rather than an institution of stone? What does it mean for you to be part of a holy priesthood?

  1. Peter gives four descriptions of the church in v. 9: chosen people, royal priesthood, holy nation, people belonging to God. What do these mean to you? What do they say about your calling as a follower of Jesus? What does the second half of the verse mean?

  1. In verse 10 Peter reminds us what we were and what we are now. Why is it important to remember our past and what God has done for us?

  1. Why does Peter urge us to live as “aliens and strangers in the world” (v. 11)? What are some practical ways you can live this way? What are some of the challenges and obstacles you face?

  1. What are some of the “sinful desires which war against your soul” (v. 11)?

  1. What are some reasons for us to “live such good lives among the pagans” (v. 12)? What are some ways we can help them to “glorify God”?

Steps:

What is a step you can take this week to live “IN the world but not OF the world”?  Ask someone to hold you accountable to whatever step you decide.

Prayer: Praise God for making you a part of His kingdom and ask Him to help you be a blessing to your neighbors.
